Duties and Responsibilities
The University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus invites applications for temporary part-time Lab Assistants, to support course delivery in the Veterinary Technology Associate Diploma program. The appointments will begin in September 2025 and will end in November 2025. The positions are based at the Ridgetown Campus, in the municipality of Chatham-Kent, 200km southwest of the University’s main campus in Guelph.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Academic Quality and Student Success, Lab Assistants are responsible for attending course labs, delivering and setting up laboratory material provided by the instructor(s) and for providing student support.
Courses Available:
DVT*1120 Hematology 1 and Microbiology
Tuesday: 8am-3pm
Thursday: 8am-3pm
This course consists of introductory theoretical and practical modules in hematology and microbiology. The microbiology module includes the study of microorganisms with emphasis on their morphology, physiology, biochemistry, culture, and identification. Operations of the light microscopes and laboratory safety will be discussed. The hematology module will introduce students to the basic aspects of animal blood evaluation. Practical sampling techniques, handling and processing of samples, and cell identification will be introduced. Hematology mathematical calculations will also be covered.
DVT*1010 Anatomy and Physiology I
Tuesday: 8am-3pm
This is an introductory course which encompasses the gross anatomy and physiology of domestic animals with special emphasis on the cat as a pet animal species. The course covers select major body systems, with emphasis on those of veterinary clinical significance.
DVT*2320 Surgical Exercises
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
8:30am-11:30am
This course deals with the practical and theoretical application of anaesthetic and surgical techniques to animals. Students will be expected to apply the rationale behind the possible complications with each surgery, thus enabling them to be involved in client education. During the laboratory sessions, students work in small groups becoming proficient in delivering anaesthesia to animals, performing surgical assistance with aseptic instrument handling with the veterinarian, and practice surgical nursing, and post-operative care to the patient. Students will develop skills such as proper placement and care of an intravenous indwelling catheter for anesthetized animals, collection of patient blood to perform a pre-surgical serum chemistry profile along with applying the theoretical principles of anesthesia.

Requirements
- Must be a Registered Veterinary Technician in good standing.
- Must have two-year Veterinary Technology diploma or relevant lab experience.
- Must have one year of clinical experience working as a Registered Veterinary Technician. Experience working within the discipline of the assigned course is preferred.
- Strong communication skills are required.
