Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

How do I get a hiring manager name for the cover letter?

At the University, we hire by committee, so in order to address everyone on the committee, it is recommended that you use a salutation of: “Dear Selection Committee” .

How is hiring conducted at UG?

Hiring decisions are made by committee, which normally includes 3 or more people.  Qualified candidates are normally invited to interview with a committee at least once.

Do internal employees get preference over external employees?

The University of Guelph is a unionized environment and positions falling within certain employee groups or unions do have levels of consideration. This means that hiring committees are required to consider bargaining unit members before they are able to consider non-members.

What does tentative banding mean on a posting?

A tentative banding indicates that the wage/salary band is subject to job evaluation committee review before it is confirmed.

Can I submit an application after the application close date?

Postings close at 11:59pm on the closing date listed on the posting. Please contact careers@uoguelph.ca to inquire about a late application.

How do I know the salary range for a position I am applying for?

To see the specific salary grid, you may visit the Employee Groups & Agreements page where you will find wage/salary grids by group.

How do I modify an application that I have already submitted?

You are encouraged to carefully review your application before you submit it. If your application is in 'Under Review' Status and the position posting is still open, you must withdraw your application and resubmit your updated application before the close date of the posting.

How do I withdraw my application?

If you would like to remove your application from a position you have applied to, log-in using the email address and password you used when you created an applicant account.  You will see your application(s) under the header ‘Jobs Applied’.  Click the relevant application and you will see the option to ‘withdraw application’.

How can I follow-up an application?

The University thanks all applicants for their interest, however, only those candidates considered for an interview will be contacted.

How long does a search process take at UG?

The search process varies depending on the position and the department and could range between two and eight weeks or longer.  If you have not received any email notification of your application status you are advised to check your application status by logging into your applicant profile.
