General Purpose

Located at Ontario Crops Research Centre - Bradford, the Facility Technician works with the Research Centre Manager in the day-to-day operations of the Centre in support of research trials led by Principal Investigators including academic, industry and government research clients, with the ultimate goal of developing new knowledge to expand the understanding of agronomic systems in organic (muck) soil. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Facility Technician will also support field trials such as cultivar evaluation, soil fertility and nutrient management, integrated cropping systems, environmental impact and weed/insect/disease management trials on behalf of industry and government clients. Crops supported at the Centre include onions, carrots, celery, beets, cole crops, and other emerging crops. The incumbent will assist with the implementation and execution of experiments in a timely manner with high levels of quality, accuracy and reliability and due consideration to effectiveness, cost and safety. The Facility Technician will also be responsible for the organization and the day-to-day operation of the Integrated Pest Management Program including assistance in the identification of pests and disease and recommendations for their control.  

 

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in agriculture or similar field such as engineering, planning, advanced accounting. 
  • 2 years of experience in agronomic field work or a combination of education and working experience. 
  • Experience operating and maintaining a wide range of agricultural equipment for field preparation, planting, pesticide application and harvesting activities.
  • An understanding of the calculations used for spraying and seeding activities and the ability to work in the field under various weather conditions including the ability to lift 60 pounds is essential. The ideal candidate will have the demonstrated ability to work individually and as part of a team in completing tasks.   A class G Driver’s License is required.
  • A Grower Pesticide Safety Certification is required
