General Purpose

The Department of Chemistry is a central academic unit within the College of Computational, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences and currently consists of 18 faculty members, 13 regular full-time staff, seven temporary/contract staff, and over 60 graduate students. We also work with ~6,000 undergraduate students each year and provide a wide range of services to support these activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chair of the Chemistry Department, the Teaching Laboratory Technician will be an integral member of the team of technical staff that delivers hands-on chemistry laboratory learning to undergraduate students. Working alongside Laboratory Coordinators, the primary focus of the Teaching Laboratory Technician will be supporting the delivery of first-year chemistry teaching lab activities. The Fall offering of CHEM*1040 is the single largest course on campus and teaches upwards of 3000 students, each of whom participates in dedicated lab sections of no more than 24 students, requiring the Chemistry Department to hire and train over 25 student TAs to deliver over 100 in-person laboratory sections bi-weekly. Responsibilities of the Teaching Laboratory Technician will include developing training materials and training student TAs, preparing reagents and setting up equipment, leading hands-on laboratory sessions for undergraduate students, and acting as a resource for student consultations, thereby improving the hands-on learning experience for students. The Teaching Laboratory Technician will also support improvements of course content by contributing to the creation of new assessments and laboratory activities, and supporting the development of new teaching modules, such as the creation of video tutorials or virtual laboratories.

The role is expected to assist with onboarding and training new academic personnel, including TAs, through the university's academic and instructional policies and procedures. This position will be a department resource regarding EDI issues, including working with SAS and supporting AODA compliance in department teaching materials. The Teaching Laboratory Technician will also contribute to the development of the student experience by identifying, exploring, and training department personnel on relevant technologies to facilitate information dissemination and student engagement - including CourseLink, Teams, Zoom, SharePoint, and department websites and social media, and by attending workshops and seminars on managing student learning and integrating experiential learning. They will also play an important role in the Department's outreach and recruitment activities, including assisting with department, college, and university-wide initiatives such as BattleSTEM and high-school field trips to campus.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree in Chemistry or a closely related field, and at least one year of experience teaching in a laboratory setting, preferably in an academic or university environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A completed or nearly completed graduate degree in Chemistry or adjacent would be viewed favourably
• Experience with developing training materials, course content, virtual learning modules or teaching in a university environment would be considered an asset
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and a high level of diplomacy and tact
• A high level of attention to detail, strong organizational skills and proven ability to prioritize a challenging workload
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, including confidence working with various stakeholders, such as faculty, staff, and students
• Candidates must have intermediate-level skills in MS Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Office 365, and virtual meeting software, including Teams and Zoom
• Experience with university academic regulations and software (Colleague, ClassList, CourseLink) would be considered an asset.
• Experience with website maintenance, including Drupal and CampusPress, would be considered an asset.
• Experience with creating social media content in a professional setting would be advantageous.
