General Purpose

Student Wellness Services comprises several departments working together to facilitate the development of student well-being and providing support to assist in the success in their academic careers.

 

Duties and Responsibilites

Reporting to the Manager of Wellness Education & Promotion, the Wellness Educator is responsible for developing strong, evidence-based programs that improve health-related behaviours among students. Working from a harm-reduction and social justice framework through collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team, the incumbent will design, evaluate and make recommendations for improvement to on-going educational programs that address the full range of health and wellness issues with an emphasis on mental health as well as sexual and gender-based violence. Activities will be driven by a clear vision for improved outcomes, with sensitivity to ameliorating the status of those who are experiencing difficulties. The incumbent will also have one-on-one meetings with students who are seeking health and wellness support and education, providing them with materials and advice that best supports the students’ needs. Working with Student Managers, the incumbent will recruit, train and supervise Peer Health Educators, student volunteers, and academic practicum students to ensure that those on the frontlines have the core competencies to facilitate learning and provide emotional support to students who are exploring sensitive personal issues and will develop marketing and promotional strategies for the Wellness programs.

 

Requirements

  • An Undergraduate degree in a discipline related to health promotion. A Master’s degree in Public Health is preferred.
  • Three years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience developing, implementing and evaluating workshops, presentations, marketing, and other learning –oriented programming for students on themes related to health, well-being and diversity.
  • Knowledge of experiential learning pedagogy, and the development of learning outcomes.
  • An understanding of how equity, diversity and inclusion intersects with health-related issues.
  • An understanding of health-related issues in a post-secondary setting, including: substance use, sexual health, mental health, and sexual and gender-based violence.
  • Experience with recruiting, training, and coaching students in a peer-to-peer service delivery environment.
  • An understanding of student culture and development.
  • Ability to build strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders in a variety of departments/units across a large and decentralized organization.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with supporting individuals who have disclosed highly sensitive personal information and who are emotionally vulnerable.
  • Ability to work evenings and some weekends.
