General Purpose
The Research Data Analyst will develop systems to evaluate and report on all aspects of the University’s research performance relative to its peer institutions in Canada and around the world by collecting, synthesizing, curating, and conducting statistical analysis of research performance data from internal and external sources.
The incumbent will contribute to the entire analytics process of the research enterprise from defining key questions to designing and delivering alerts, dashboards, recommendations and internal and external reports.
The incumbent must interact and collaborate with as well as provide services to a broad range of stakeholders within the University including ORI staff and senior management (VPRI, AVPRs), Institutional Research and Planning, associate deans research and graduate studies, college research managers, departmental offices, and the Library.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position will assist the Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) by providing intelligence on research performance within the University including but not limited to:
- Research proposal successes
- Internal interdisciplinary research synergies
- Understanding hidden research strengths
- Understanding research complementarities with other institutions
- Benchmarking research performance against comparator disciplines at other institutions
- Successful inter-institutional collaborations as well as untapped potential for research collaborations
The incumbent is responsible for reporting institutional information to external agencies, including the provincial and federal government (e.g. Canada Research Chairs program, Research Support Fund annual application and reporting).
In addition, the incumbent is expected to stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in reporting and analytics technology, recommending and implementing new tools and methodologies as appropriate.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in social science, statistics, or a related discipline. Master's degree is preferred
- A minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience, with 5 years of progressive experience in research administration involving preparation of reports and conducting analyses of research performance data
- Deep knowledge of research administration and the research funding environment in Canada and Ontario
- Previous policy-related research experience in the post-secondary or government sector is an asset
- Proficiency in SAS, R and SPSS, or ability to become proficient
- Proficiency using Excel (e.g., charts, formulas, pivot tables) and business intelligence reporting tools, such as Cognos,
- Proficiency in using dashboard design tools, such as Tableau
- Strong knowledge and understanding of Relational Database concepts and data modelling.
- Experience recommending, establishing monitoring, tracking and reporting on KPIs and metrics
- Excellent oral (e.g., presentation) and written communication skills with the demonstrated ability to digest complex information and summarize in a clear, concise fashion
- Demonstrated high levels of problem solving and critical thinking skills, logical reasoning and argument - a logical and strategic thinker with strong critical reasoning skills, proactively identifies risks and issues, recommends solutions, challenges the status quo
- Quantitative mathematical and numerical analysis; ability to analyze and interpret numerical/financial data
- Exhibit sound and accurate judgement and demonstrate accuracy, attention to detail and thoroughness
