General Purpose
Reporting to a faculty member in the department of Clinical Studies, the department is seeking to hire a temporary part time Registered Veterinary Technician, Nutrition to assist the OVC Pet Nutrition Team with the mission of improving individual animal health by educating outstanding veterinary students and advancing knowledge in the field of veterinary medicine.
Duties and Responsibilities
The position involves assisting and evaluating graduate nutrition students in the context of their graduate research projects, as well as supporting the teaching of DVM students in clinical skills relevant to veterinary nutrition and client communication.
The position will be assigned to provide animal health technical duties within a nutrition research setting for approximately 50% of workload and 50% of their time within the Clinical Nutrition Service in the OVC Health Sciences Centre. Under the supervision of a department faculty member, the key areas of responsibility will include:
- Assisting in the nutrition aspects of admission, care and discharge of companion animal patients
- Providing technical support and functional guidance to veterinary students, graduate students, clinicians (faculty) and staff.
- Instruction of undergraduate veterinary students in clinical skills pertinent to veterinary nutrition and client communication.
- Assisting graduate nutrition students in the context of their graduate research project.
Requirements
Successful completion of an accredited Veterinary Technician program recognized by the Ontario Association for Veterinary Technicians; evidence of commitment and dedication to companion animal nutrition with interest in board certification. Candidates must have successfully completed the Veterinary Technician Examination (VTNE) and the OAVT mandatory ethics exam. OAVT registration is required. A minimum of 2 years prior experience working as a Registered Veterinary Technician is preferred. Excellent communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; experience performing restraint and anesthesia in companion animals are all required competencies for the role. A protective rabies titre is required.
The incumbent will be expected to work a 20-hour work week.
