General Purpose

Reporting to the Manager of Clinical Services, the incumbent will be a member of Student Health Services’ team with a focus on supporting the functions of a primary health care team. The incumbent will play a role in participating in health initiatives of the clinic pertaining to student access, campus health and working at campus and university affiliated vaccination events. Student Health Services provides primary health care to all currently registered students of the University of Guelph.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse is expected to perform the duties of the primary health care RN according to Student Health Services’ protocols and procedures, and is responsible for efficient and competent nursing care consistent with the College of Nurses of Ontario and with the Regulated Health Professions Act.  to provide needed coverage as required.  The incumbent will be expected to have excellent communication and organizational skills, exceptional nursing judgement, be prepared to operate independently and possess the ability to work with a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds as well as young children and families.  The incumbent will be expected to work other vaccination clinics (including mobile clinics/initiatives) held on campus for influenza and rabies as well as periodically travel to Ridgetown Campus for rabies vaccination and titre clinics. As a full-time RN, the incumbent will receive orientation to the Information Nurse role and perform all duties of this assignment according to Student Health Services protocols and procedures including Health information Management processes according to PHIPPA regulations. The Information Nurse is a collaborator within the broader Student Wellness Department and campus. Familiarity with campus and community health care resources will be expected. Knowledge and experience in primary nursing care are required for all RNs working in Student Health Services including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Emergency care, triage procedures and assessment skills
  • Basic Rescuer CPR certifications
  • Knowledge of laboratory specimen collection including nasopharyngeal swabs
  • Knowledge and experience with venipuncture, ear syringing, wound care and suture removal are required
  • Knowledge of health teaching in the areas of sexual health, emergency contraception, and testing for sexually transmitted infections
  • Familiarity with allergy injection protocols and working knowledge of Routine Childhood Immunization schedules
  • Mental Health Assessments including suicide prevention according to Registered Nurses Association of Ontario Best Practice Guidelines
  • Knowledge and comfort with Harm Reduction approaches to substance use including the substance use screening tools
  • Demonstrates values of equity, diversity and inclusion in the delivery and promotion of health care
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical records software
     

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses along with a minimum of 5 years of Community Clinic/Hospital or Public Health nursing experience. 
  • The individual must possess strong assessment and health teaching skills and experience with adolescents and young adults from diverse backgrounds. 
  • The incumbent will have strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, will work collaboratively amongst a team; will exude a positive attitude and contribute towards a healthy workplace, and demonstrate the ability to support individuals’ health status with an inclusive and accessible approach.

 

Flexibility in scheduling is required with the availability for travel to Ridgetown campus, periodic weekend and evening work.
