General Purpose
Reporting to the Associate Dean, Academic - College of Management & Economics, the BComm Program Counsellor directs the day-to-day operation of the BComm Program Counselling Office, including the management of two full time staff, two contract positions. The incumbent develops a range of academic advising services for BComm students and faculty and supervises the counselling decisions made by staff in the BComm Program Counselling Office. The BComm Program Counsellor has particular expertise around the degree program requirements and regulations, as well as the various specializations and their fit with the degree program. He/she counsels the more complex and difficult cases and acts as a mediator between faculty and students. The Program Counsellor is also familiar with the policies and procedures that govern university practise.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide information to students, faculty, staff, departmental chairs, and the Associate Dean about the academic requirements of the degree program, including admission and re-admission requirements, Schedule of Studies requirements, Continuation of Study requirements, course selection, academic misconduct, transfer credits, academic review, academic consideration, and graduation requirements.
- Refer to other campus services, as necessary.
- Communicate information about the degree program to the dean, associate dean, chairs and directors, faculty advisors, curriculum committee, and program committee, and to bring forward any concerns or issues as students progress through the Schedule of Studies for the degree program.
- Liaise with the faculty advisor for the specialization, in order to provide information about the degree program and the fit of the specialization within the degree program.
The BComm Program Counsellor serves in a voting capacity as a member of the BComm Program Committee, BComm Academic Review Sub-Committee, and Admissions' Sub-Committee. They work with University Administrators on a routine basis to clarify current policies and procedures, informs staff regarding implications for office operation, and communicates with Associate Dean, Department Chairs and faculty advisors, where appropriate.
The incumbent is responsible for coordinating the entire BComm representation for University liaison functions and the BComm Program at events such as Ontario Universities Fair, Fall Preview Day, Campus Days, Spring Academic Orientation Program and New Student Academic Orientation. He/she is also responsible for designing and delivering training and development programs for residence staff and university liaison officers. The incumbent will act as a resource for University academic and Student Affairs units such as the Leaming Commons, Counselling and Student Development Centre, concerning academic needs and developing services.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in BComm or a business related program. Master's is preferred
- 3 years of previous experience counselling in a post-secondary environment
