General Purpose
Computing and Communications Services (CCS) is the central IT department at the University of Guelph, providing core IT services and technology solutions to the U of G community. Reporting to the Manager, Network Infrastructure, this position provides operational technician support for IT equipment in campus communications facilities including the telephony environment and CCS data centre facilities. Examples of IT equipment includes (but is not limited to): network switches, telephony devices, the copper and fiber cable plants, wireless access points, UPS units, racks, KVM systems, etc. The responsibility specifically includes maintaining the data centre and communications facilities and ensuring all components are secure, operational, and highly available through continuous proactive monitoring, documentation, and scheduled maintenance participation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Participation in basic monitoring, troubleshooting and repair of equipment hosted in the data centre.
- Monitoring of all network and server equipment, electrical, mechanical and emergency generator systems in data center and comm rooms and reporting of issues as appropriate.
- Installation, removal, configuration, monitoring, maintenance and decommissioning of IT network and system hardware in data center, communication rooms, classrooms, offices spaces, labs, residences across campus.
- Diagnostics and resolution of access layer network issues.
- Documentation, and asset management of IT equipment in comm rooms and data centre.
- Telephony environment system administration – includes administration of end user devices, and hardware repairs.
- Communications and Coordination – verbal, email and other forms of communications with various individuals and organizations as required to support the above responsibilities.
- Assist Systems Management analysts with builds, upgrades, provisions, and installations and decommissioning of servers where required.
Requirements
- Completion of a two (2) year post-secondary diploma in Computer Engineering Technology or Computer System Technology along with two (2) years of related work experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered. Industry cabling certification (i.e. BICSI) will be considered an asset.
- Basic knowledge of network protocols, principles and concepts including the ability to troubleshoot local connectivity issues.
- Ability to follow defined operational standards, understand data center critical infrastructure, and understand server operating systems.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills.
- Demonstrated ability of multi-tasking skills while working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment required.
