General Purpose

The Music Theatre Technician provides technical expertise and production coordination to support the Music program’s creative, curricular, and public performance activities within the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM). The role ensures that SOFAM’s annual musical theatre production, digital music courses, and end-of-term performances are delivered safely, professionally, and in line with academic and institutional standards.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include coordinating all technical aspects of the annual musical theatre production (sound, lighting, props, safety), supporting digital music instruction (e.g., MUSC*1200, *2100, *3940), and managing technical setup for rehearsals and performances in venues such as the Arts Research Centre and War Memorial Hall. The technician also oversees specialized equipment (microphones, mixers, monitors), mentors students in sound and production practices, and collaborates with faculty, students, and technical staff across the College of Arts.

 

This role combines production planning, hands-on technical skill, and student support to ensure SOFAM’s artistic programming meets high standards for quality, safety, and inclusivity.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate technical setup and execution of the annual musical theatre production
  • Provide sound and AV support for rehearsals, performances, and classes
  • Maintain and track inventory of microphones, mixers, and other equipment
  • Support music technology labs and digital audio software
  • Mentor students in safe, effective use of audio and staging equipment
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff on production timelines and safety planning

 

Requirements

Education and Training:

  • Two-year college diploma in Theatre Production, Sound Design, or a related field
  • Bachelor’s degree (BA, BMus, or BFA) in Musical Theatre, Theatre Production, Sound Design, or Music is preferred

 

Experience:

  • 2–3 years of experience in live musical theatre or similar technical environments
  • Experience in live sound mixing, stagecraft, and backstage coordination
  • Experience mentoring students or working in post-secondary instructional settings

 

Preferred Certifications:

  • ETCP certification (Rigging or Entertainment Electrician)
  • Health & Safety training consistent with IATSE standards
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • EDI training (e.g., anti-racism, gender identity)

 

Employee Type: Temporary  
Hourly rate: $30.12 - $33.66  per hour
