General Purpose

The Laboratory Technician, Molecular Biology/Mycoplasmology will provide technical assistance to the Veterinary Microbiologist in the diagnostic molecular biology laboratories at the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL).

 

Duties and Responsibilties

Responsibilities include: conducting routine molecular biology tests; sample receiving; sample preparation; manual and automated DNA/RNA extractions; culture and identify Mycoplasma and other bacteria; fish processing for bacterial culture, tissue collection, and trimming for histologic evaluation; assisting with organization and co-ordination in the development and implementation of new molecular biology assays by preparing reagents and establishing analytical methods including appropriate quality control measures; reporting test results to clients through the Animal Health Laboratory information management system (LIMS);  maintaining equipment in compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) and inventory of supplies; ensuring laboratory cleanliness and safety; general microbiology laboratory functions; and other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

  • Three-year community college diploma related to microbiology and parasitology, and one year of related experience in diagnostic molecular biology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory with diagnostic molecular biology techniques such as manual and automated high-throughput DNA/RNA extraction on various animal samples, high-throughput conventional and real-time PCR, DNA sequence analysis
  • Excellent knowledge of personal and laboratory safety related to handling and disposal of infectious specimens
  • Experience in an organization with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, and a thorough understanding of quality protocols
  • Excellent knowledge of laboratory chemicals and supplies
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong understanding of WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety in a laboratory environment. 

 

A protective rabies titer is required. The position will involve handling live bees and fish.
