General Purpose

Conforming to the Laboratory Services Division quality system, the successful candidate will be responsible for the preparation of histological specimens in support of anatomic pathology. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:  receiving, recording and preparing tissue specimens for microscopic examination, including trimming / grossing of formlain-fixed biopsy and postmortem tissue samples; embedding tissues in paraffin, cutting sections, and staining slides; performing specialized techniques and special histochemical staining including immunohistochemistry; maintaining stock of tissue controls; maintaining quality control by investigating and correcting unsatisfactory test results; preparing reagents used in routine and special techniques; assisting with method development projects; filing and retrieving slides and blocks; preparing summaries and special reports; providing technical guidance and instruction to colleagues, students and staff; maintaining adequate inventory of supplies; investigating and resolving internal and external client service issues; and maintaining laboratory cleanliness and safety. 

 

Requirements

  • One-year Community College program in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and histotechnology laboratory experience;
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of slide sectioning and stains, and of laboratory supplies and chemicals;
  • Proven efficiency in cutting and embedding tissues in a high volume lab, working under tight deadlines;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills combined with demonstrated team-work strengths;
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities;
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast paced, client-focused, team environment;
  • Good understanding of Occupational Health and Safety legislation, WHMIS and Biosafety;
  • Must be or willing to be rabies vaccinated.

 

Hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, and/or Tuesday to Saturday, with a scheduled start time varying between 7:00 am – 9:00 am.
