Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Administrative Officer of the School of Environmental Science, the Jr. Accountant is essential for ensuring effective financial operations within the department and college. This position is responsible for providing financial analysis and ad hoc reporting to the OAC Dean’s Office Accountant and Administrative Officer, specifically regarding departmental expenses and budgets, purchase orders, and p-card transactions. The role also supports the administration of these activities. The incumbent will be required to accurately track various research grants and process journal entries to ensure grant funds are spent according to budget. Additionally, this position is responsible for maintaining effective communication with department faculty and delivering exceptional customer service.

 

The Jr. Accountant will cultivate strong working relationships with researchers, Research Financial Services, the Office of Research Services, and other college offices and departments to support financial management.

 

The duties of this role are complex, and errors can have significant consequences, making attention to detail and intellectual rigour essential. Success in this position requires the ability to work effectively in a dynamic and innovative environment, balancing competing deadlines, priorities, and tasks. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to collaborate within a team as well as work independently, and must be able to perform under pressure in a fast-paced setting. This position demands considerable professional judgement and superior communication skills. Flexibility to meet the expectations of college members and stakeholders beyond the college is also required.

 

Requirements 

  • Undergraduate Degree – in Business Administration, or an equivalent area;
  • Professional Accounting Designation: CPA (having passed the exams) but can be in process of completing experience;
  • Minimum of one (1) year of related experience.
  • Applicants should have proven knowledge of financial and accounting principles and procedures, be able to conduct financial analyses, and be able to generate reports to monitor projects/programs' financial status;
  • Exceptional analytical and attention to detail skills;
  • Expert knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite (specifically Excel) and relational databases;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills;
  • Experience working in a university environment and an understanding research finance would be considered as an asset;
  • Knowledge and experience with ERP system would be considered an asset;
  • Having accounting experience in not-for-profit environment is preferrable;
  • Experience in a university and government culture is preferred.
