General Purpose

The University of Guelph is seeking a dynamic individual to join the HR Services team, with a strong background in payroll administration. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team supporting the final stages of the multi-year implementation of our new Human Resources Management System (including our integrated payroll platform), Gryphons at Work. Reporting to the Manager, HR Services, this position will serve as a key point of contact for employees, retirees, and departmental administrators, particularly in matters related to payroll, compensation and benefits.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of the University’s bi-weekly payroll, in compliance with federal/provincial legislation, university policies, and collective agreements/employee handbooks.
  • Investigate and resolve payroll-related issues, exercising sound judgment in determining necessary corrective actions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on the new payroll system within SAP SuccessFactors, supporting internal stakeholders through the full employee lifecycle.
  • Support the onboarding process by processing and verifying new hire information against offer letters, enrolling eligible employees in benefit programs, and ensuring compliance with legal and policy requirements through the verification of work permits and provincial health coverage.
  • Provide service and support to employees and departments through the FootPrints ticketing system.
  • Collaborate closely with the Total Compensation and Payroll Services teams and provide payroll-related insights and support across HR.
  • Review, track and monitor employee leaves of absence, ensuring compliance with applicable policies and legislation, timely payroll adjustments, accurate benefit coordination, and reporting.
  • Serve as a trusted resource on payroll and benefit topics.

 

Requirements

  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification (completed or in progress).
  • A two-year community college diploma. 
  • Several years of hands-on payroll experience, preferably within a unionized or complex organizational environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of Canadian payroll principles and employment standards.
  • Experience using HRMS or payroll systems—experience with SAP Success Factors is an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in handling sensitive financial data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven customer service skills, with the ability to provide clear guidance on payroll and benefits matters.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Outlook.
  • High degree of professionalism, discretion, and diplomacy.
