General Purpose
Reporting to the Manager, Grounds department, the Gardner will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of the University of Guelph Campus grounds in a safe and effective manner.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely maintaining assigned area(s) in keeping with accepted University standards.
- Flower bed maintenance which includes tasks such as but not limited to, weeding, mulching and planting.
- Other grounds related maintenance duties such as but not limited to, disposal of leaves and litter, sodding, seeding, pruning, and mowing grass.
- Operating maintenance equipment including push mowers, rototillers, weed trimmers.
- Interior foliage plant maintenance.
- Install and maintain surfaces such as patio stone work.
- Assisting with snow clearing as required.
- Providing functional guidance as needed.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned including equal or lower classifications.
Requirements
- Completion of grade 12.
- Diploma in horticulture.
- Minimum 6 months of relevant gardening experience.
- Experience using landscape and grounds maintenance equipment such as but not limited to, chainsaws and push mowers.
- Knowledge and commitment of established safety practices.
- Ability to read and interpret schedules, instructions, and maintain records.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team.
What Will Give You The Edge?
- Pesticide Applicator license
- Experience with blueprint reading
The successful candidate must be physically able to perform the entire range of tasks associated with this position, on a sustained basis, and in any weather conditions.
The incumbents must be available to respond to emergency call-ins, particularly during snow season, but occasionally at other times of year as well. Some shift work and overtime may be required.
