General Purpose

The Department of Clinical Studies is seeking to hire an experienced Equine Research Technician to assist the Large Animal Medicine and Surgery Clinical Faculty in improving the execution of equine clinical trials and research performed at the OVC. The position involves technical and administrative aspects to support the large animal research program of the Department, and to facilitate the timely completion of research projects funded through  Equine Guelph and other funding agencies.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

This position will function under the supervision of the Departmental Chair or designate, with the critical areas of responsibility including: 

  • Assist with study design, animal utilization protocols, study plans and recruitment materials. Support planning and execution of clinical trials, clinical research, or clinically related research.
  • Provide/support equine care activities including, but not limited to, admission, care and discharge of horses participating in studies, collection and documentation of physical findings, procurement, and submission of laboratory specimens (e.g., blood, urine, faeces) and other procedures.
  • Identify and recruit potential equine patient research candidates/patients, communicate and obtain owner permissions, schedule and participate in follow-up examinations and re-evaluation of subjects enrolled in studies.
  • Clinical data collection and management for prospective and retrospective studies, including quality assurance of data collected, data collation and summative reporting.
  • Assist with supplies, inventory and ordering, and grant budget management.
  • Assist with Departmental research laboratories and equipment management.
  • Provide technical support and functional guidance to veterinary students, graduate students, clinical faculty and staff engaged in the research of the Department.
  • Cross-training with other Departmental research technicians to assist them when available.

 

Requirements

We seek an individual passionate about and experienced with horses, their welfare and equine research. Advanced equine handling and safety skills are required. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential. Requirements for this position include successful completion of an accredited Veterinary Technician program recognized by the Ontario Association for Veterinary Technicians or equivalent, successful completion of the Veterinary Technician Examination (VTNE) and OAVT registration. A minimum of 3 years of prior experience working as a Registered Veterinary Technician, and 2 years of research support experience is required. The successful individual must be detail-oriented, willing to work in clinical and other research environments with horses, and have excellent organizational and time management skills. Proof of a protective rabies titre is required. 

 

The incumbent will be expected to work a 35-hour workweek, with occasional paid scheduling flexibility for evening and weekend assistance as required by specific studies.
