General Purpose

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Environmental Operations, Custodial Area Manager, Night Shift - Temporary up to 12 Months will be responsible for the provision of custodial services in campus buildings and student residences.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervising a team of approximately 30 unionized staff carrying out custodial duties
  • Scheduling, assigning and inspecting work, evaluating performance and advising staff on corrective measures
  • Instructing staff in procedures and in the safe use of materials and equipment
  • Keeping records daily records, including supplies, equipment and parts
  • Assuring staff are aware of relevant University and Physical Resources policies, procedures, and safety regulations, and that they are being followed
  • Ensuring compliance with the relevant collective agreement and working with other Physical Resources supervisors, including others in Custodial Services as well as the maintenance departments
  • Liaising and problem-solving with other University departments on service, operating problems, work scheduling and other issues
  • Other associated duties as assigned

 

Requirements

  • Community College education in an applicable field combined with a minimum of three years of hands-on supervisory experience and minimum of five years of custodial experience in a higher education setting.
  • Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience in a large institutional setting may also be considered
  • Firm understanding of the Association for Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA) cleaning levels
  • Experience supervising unionized employees
  • Knowledge of custodial best practices and procedures and knowledge of the care and operation of institutional cleaning equipment
  • Covid and outbreak disinfection protocols and methods, PPE, equipment, and staffing
  • Mastery of Custodial cleaning standards, chemical usage, and equipment
  • Experience scheduling & assigning work using a computerized system
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Record keeping and budgeting skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS and the Occupational Health and Safety Act

  • Ability to lead a team under pressure and under fixed deadlines

Although the incumbent is starting on the night shift, they may be required to work on any custodial shift as assigned, including weekends, with appropriate notice.
