General Purpose

The Counsellor/Therapist provides clinical work with students, on an individual and group basis to assist students in their personal and academic goals.  In consultation with the student and through professional assessment, counsellors offer brief counselling for a variety of students’ developmental and mental health concerns.

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will also work as a point person for LGBTQ2IA+ identified students. This requires focusing on clinical work with LGBTQ2IA+ identified students but also developing collaborations with student groups, community services and the Sexual and Gender Diversity Advisor in Student Experience.  The incumbent will develop specific programming for the LGBTQ2IA+ community as required.

The Counsellor/Therapist also provides crisis intervention, training, consultation and /or support to students, faculty, and the larger university community. Further responsibilities include contributing to team development, fulfilling administrative requirements such as electronic record keeping, and participation in broader university committees and projects.

 

Requirements

  • Masters level in Social Work, Counselling, or equivalent along with a minimum of three years supervised clinical experience in individual and group therapy. Membership in a regulated professional college required.
  • Clinical experience working with LGBTQ2IA+ community.
    • Since this role supports a diverse community of students, relevant lived experience will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated brief therapy and group therapy skills as well as experience with drop-in counselling and single session work.
  • Experience working with individuals with diverse and intersecting identities through anti-oppressive and trauma-informed approach. Understanding of intersectionality and the nuances of LGBTQ2IA+ identity and culture.
  • Experience with the breadth of problems presented by students, (anxiety, depression, interpersonal problems, developmental issues, trauma, loss, grief) as well as the complexity, some mental health service experience an asset.
  • Experience in crisis intervention, risk assessment and management.
  • Understanding the broader mental health system, including emergency mental health services, procedures, and legislation. Clear understanding of privacy legislation.
  • Ability and willingness to consult with and develop the interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; strong written, oral and presentation skills.
  • Electronic record keeping skills; proficiency with computers, MS Office or other word processing, and presentation software.
  • Counsellors will work in different locations/colleges in the university depending on service need.

This appointment is regularly performed on campus.  There is presently an option for one virtual day per week and is dependent on operational requirements.

Professional/Managerial Salary Bands 


The target hiring salary for this position is minimum up to 96% of midpoint for the salary grade.
