Position Description:
The Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Management (Open to Tenured University of Guelph Internal Applicants Only).
Reporting to the Dean of the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, the Chair is responsible for the orderly, effective, efficient, and collegial operation of the Department of Management. This includes supporting departmental functioning through the development and implementation of effective departmental practices and processes as well as ensuring that Lang and University policies and procedures are followed. The Chair is also responsible for supporting members of the department (via mentoring and facilitation of their assigned responsibilities), consulting with members to create recommendations, as well as promoting the interests of the department (see UGFA Collective Agreement, Article 20 for full description).
The Chair is expected to provide leadership for developing and implementing a strategic vision for the department that (a) supports excellence in teaching, research, and service, (b) fosters a culture that positively contributes to departmental functioning including supporting faculty and staff well-being, and (c) provides strategic direction for addressing key challenges and opportunities (e.g., navigating a resource-constrained environment, including strategically developing revenue generating programs, demonstrating fiscal responsibility, and cultivating relationships that can promote the interests of the department and Lang).
Candidates should have a collegial approach to leadership, including strong communication skills (with a focus on open, transparent, and respectful communication), a collaborative relationship-focused orientation that can build and leverage internal/external relationships to facilitate advancement towards the department's strategic goals, as well as a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Ideal candidates will have tenure and will be dynamic, innovative and thoughtful leaders. The successful candidate will hold a Master's or Doctoral degree. An established record of success in teaching, research and service is required. Candidates should be committed to enhancing the success of the Department and its programs by working effectively with, and being hightly visible and accessible to, key stakeholders, including faculty, staff and students, and also with alumni, employers, professional bodies, and granting agencies. The ideal candiate will also have some experience in external relations, human resource management, planning and budgeting. Changes within the higher education environment suggest that the individual should also be an effective advocate for the social sciences, but also entrepreneurial and adaptive, willing to consider new approaches and revenue-generating opportunities.

The Department of Management consists of more than 35 faculty and staff members. In addition to offering a PhD in Management, MSc in Management, Masters in Project Management, and an Accounting GDip/MPAcc, the Department serves students in three BComm majors (Accounting, Management, and Sport and Event Management), eight undergraduate minors and three certificates. The Department is an integral part of the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics at the University of Guelph. The School delivers one of the largest undergraduate business programs in Ontario with over 4,000 students currently enrolled, and offers a wide range of specialized programs in business and economics across undergraduate, graduate and professional education.
