General Purpose

The breadth and scope of this position is extensive. The University of Guelph's campus consists of approximately 1,000 acres with 149 buildings totaling approximately 7.1 million gross square feet of floor area. Guelph is the 5th largest university in the Ontario system in terms of area.

 

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Campus Planning, Design and Development, the Associate Director, Capital Development is charged with the responsibility of supervising, directing and managing all aspects of capital development on campus including the management and direct supervision of the Capital Development group and the assignment of projects to staff. The University's Capital Development group is comprised of project and construction management professionals, including external project management consultants on an as needed basis. This position routinely manages consultant contracts that provide the same services as full-time employees when the project workload requires additional resources. The project management team is typically responsible for the delivery of approximately 90 projects in the range of $100 million annually.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent manages and provides holistic capital development expertise, including project and construction management, from conceptual design through to commissioning and occupancy, as required. The Associate Director is responsible for the management and delivery of Capital Development initiatives to satisfy institutional priorities and to provide leadership and technical advisory services within the Campus Planning, Design and Development department and other service departments on an as needed basis including legal and procurement matters.

 

This position serves as one of the primary University representatives when dealing with external agencies and various Authorities Having Jurisdiction including the City of Guelph, Technical Standards and Safety Authority and the Electrical Safety Authority. Extensive negotiation with these bodies as well as external contractors and consultants is routinely required.

 

Requirements

An undergraduate degree in architecture, engineering, construction management or related field, and 9 years of directly related experience. An OAA, P.Eng., or CET certification would be considered an asset to this position. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Additional requirements include the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both written and orally. The Associate Director must have professional and interpersonal skills and experience to support and assume the responsibilities of the Director, other discipline Managers and departmental Project Managers as may be required in their absence. Excellent computer skills related to project management and design are required, including the usage of Microsoft Suite applications, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and construction project management software. The incumbent must be intimately familiar with the construction industry, its practices, and procedures. Thorough knowledge of building and fire codes, construction safety, contract law, Construction Act legislation, and University of Guelph standards is a must. The Associate Director has over-arching responsibility for departmentally executed projects with respect to contract accordance, quality assurance, budget control, schedule control, code compliance, safe and non-disruptive implementation.
