The School of Computer Science at the University of Guelph invites applications for a teaching-focused tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, with the earliest start date of November 1, 2024.  The successful candidate will allocate 70% of their effort to in-person teaching (at least 5 courses per year). This is not a remote position. The remaining 30% of the candidates time will be split between research activities and administrative duties (service) for the School, College, and University.

 

Qualifications

Education

A successful candidate will, at the time of appointment, hold a thesis-based PhD in Computer Science or a related field, from an English language university.  Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written English is required.

Teaching

Candidates must possess a strong interest in undergraduate teaching and demonstrate capability to teach junior and senior subjects in our Bachelor of Computing majors: Computer Science and Software Engineering.  Previous experience teaching at the post-secondary level is required.  Such experience must include independent responsibility for undergraduate students and teaching assistants such as might be obtained as a sessional lecturer, a post-doctoral or prior academic appointment, or a teaching assistant position with lecturing responsibility. Experience in teaching Software Engineering courses is particularly valuable for this position as is experience with large, in person courses.  Experience in teaching graduate courses is also valued as is previous experience supervising undergraduate or graduate research projects.

Scholarship

Candidates should demonstrate a capacity for conducting research in a field encompassed by the broad domains of Computer Science and Computer Science Education.  Candidates should indicate how their research complements the existing strengths in the School of Computer Science.

 

Service

Faculty members in the School of Computer Science share in the administrative work of the school.  Candidates must provide evidence of community engagement.  This could include experiences with organizing conferences, participating in outreach, volunteering for events, or being involved in student clubs or councils in a leadership role.  Prior experience with service activities as an academic are an asset.

 

School of Computer Science

As of Fall 2023, the School of Computer Science has 1,023 undergraduate students enrolled across its three undergraduate programs and 112 graduate students in its four graduate programs. It is currently experiencing a growth cycle in both undergraduate and graduate enrollments. The School is currently supported by 27 faculty members and 11 staff members.
